Artwork for the debut album of free-jazz group ‘The Markov Chain. Their name refers to a mathematical system which comprises of a random chain of events where each subsequent state depends only on the current state (and not on the sequence that preceded it).

The artwork concept is based on the game ‘Snakes and Ladders’, an example of a Markov Chain. The game’s elements (snakes, ladders, dice, grid) are illustrated in a free, expressionistic way (reminiscent of the band’s improvisation style) while still suggesting their original form.

The visual style embodies the spirit of The Markov Chain’s post-modern music, which references various genres of jazz though still lies within the free-jazz canon.
